Who I Am

Hi, I’m Jordan Ryan — the person behind CooksWave. By day, I’m a chef, and by night (and most weekends), I’m still the one standing at the stove at home in Austin, Texas, usually with a wooden spoon in one hand and my phone propped up against the coffee maker so I can jot down what actually worked.

My friends don’t call me a chef — they call me “the person who always knows what to make with three random things left in the fridge.” That’s really the whole story of how CooksWave started.

How I Got Into Cooking

Cooking has been my world for as long as I can remember — I turned that passion into a career and have spent years working in professional kitchens, from busy dinner service to menu development. But somewhere along the way, I noticed a strange gap: everything I knew how to do fast and well in a restaurant kitchen didn’t automatically translate to what worked for me, or for friends and family, at home on a random Tuesday night.

Home cooking is a different beast. You don’t have a prep team, a walk-in fridge, or three sous chefs backing you up. So I started applying professional technique to real home-kitchen constraints — normal appliances, everyday ingredients, and thirty minutes instead of three hours. Today, that’s exactly what fuels our home kitchen every week, and it’s become a personal library of recipes I’ve tested, simplified, and actually trust for real life, not just a restaurant pass.

What I Actually Know

I’m not here to make you cook like a restaurant — I’m here to translate professional technique into something that actually works on a home stove. What I bring to the table is hands-on, real-kitchen experience with:

  • Quick, weeknight-friendly meals that come together in 30–40 minutes
  • Cooking for picky eaters and small budgets without sacrificing flavor
  • Smart ingredient swaps when you don’t have the “perfect” pantry
  • Meal planning that actually survives a busy week

Last year alone, our household cooked [X]% of our meals at home instead of ordering out — a habit that saved real money and, honestly, made mealtimes feel a lot less stressful. I’ll also be upfront about what I don’t do: you won’t find fine-dining plating tutorials or 12-ingredient sauces here. My lane is real food, for real weeknights.

The Gap I Kept Running Into

Early on, I spent hours scrolling recipe blogs and cooking sites, and I noticed the same problem over and over: recipes that photographed beautifully but didn’t hold up in an actual kitchen. Ingredient lists assumed I had a fully stocked pantry. Instructions skipped the steps where things usually go wrong. And almost nobody talked about substitutions — what to do when you’re out of buttermilk, or don’t own a stand mixer, or need a dinner that works for both a toddler and an adult with zero patience for spice.

What I could never find was a source that felt like it was written by someone who’d actually stood at the stove and hit the same walls I had.

My Plan to Fix That

So that’s exactly what CooksWave is built to be — the resource I wish I’d had when I started. Every recipe on this site is one I’ve personally cooked, tested, and often messed up at least once before getting right. I’ll show you real ingredient swaps, note where recipes commonly go wrong, and be honest when something is genuinely more effort than it’s worth. No stock photos of dishes I’ve never made, no recycled recipes I haven’t tried myself.

What You’ll Find on CooksWave

This site is built for home cooks — especially busy people who want real, satisfying meals without spending hours in the kitchen. You’ll find content organized around four main areas: quick weeknight dinners, budget-friendly family meals, smart ingredient substitutions, and simple meal planning strategies that actually stick.

Expect step-by-step recipes with real photos from my own kitchen, troubleshooting tips for common mistakes, and honest reviews of the tools and shortcuts that are actually worth your money. New recipes and guides go up every week, so there’s always something fresh to try.

Let’s Get Cooking

Cooking shouldn’t feel like a performance — it should feel like something you can actually pull off on a Tuesday night. If you’re tired of recipes that overpromise and underdeliver, you’re in the right place.

Let’s make weeknight cooking easier, together.
